The first census was completed in 1801 and has been conducted every ten years since, except 1941. The 1931 census was destroyed in a fire during the Second World War. The censuses from 1801 to 1831 were merely a headcount, names were not recorded. The 1841 census recorded names and addresses but not relationships or place of birth, only whether born in or out of count
